Using Umpint to Verify Document

Introduction

Umpint is a service that allows you to both confirm that an electronic document you have been sent is not fraudulent and also provide you with proof that you checked this on a specific date.

Process of checking

There are 2 ways to check:

  1. Drag and drop the document on the website front page.

  2. Email document to check@bot.umpint.com

Dragging and dropping

Just drag and drop one or more into this area of the home page:

When you do this after a few seconds the page will scroll up and the result will appear:

From the above you can see who signed it - in this case our testing site call "dummybank.umpint.com" and date it was signed on.

When you drop a document onto the above webpage the document never leaves your web browser. Instead we compute a hash (in this case the long row of letters and numbers starting in a759bcd.. and this is sent to our servers to check the authenticity.

Certificate

To get a certificate you then can either just click on the Submit button below:

The certificate will then just include the hash of the document and no further information will be sent to us. This certificate includes mathematical proof that the document is authentic. We can provide this as our partner organization's provide us with the hash and digital signature of all documents they produce.

Timestamp

A timestamp is a document that includes mathematical proof that the certificate produced existed on or before a specific point in time. This is useful as would allow you to prove that you checked the authenticity of the document before you onboarded a customer or undertook a transaction.

To receive a timestamped document you need to include your email in the above form and select Yes next to "Timestamp proof document and email". This is because the generation of the timestamp can take a few hours so we need to email it to you once available.

Email

Alternatively you can just email the document to check@bot.umpint.com. The bot will email you back with the certificate if the document is valid, and a timestamp document a few hours later that proves you have checked this document on this day.

Note - this approach is less confidential than using the website. When you use the website the documents never leave your PC. With this approach we have to store the documents on our servers for a few minutes whilst we process them.
